The best way to deal with infestations, hands down, is to wait for them to fall asleep. When the bugs are asleep you can send colonists in to melee the hives to death. Careful though, if they are within reach of an insect after they are done smashing the nest they will stupidly attack the insect and aggro all of them.. Rimworld infestations

It used to be that infestations only happened happened if there's open space under an overhead mountain and the temperature is warmer than -17C. As I've expanded, I've backfilled all the tunnels I've made mining. There's not a single speck of open space with overhead mountain ANYWHERE on the map except for the tunnel I have ... Wooden furniture tends to have decently high health while also being 100% flammable, so it's good if you just want to isolate the bugs and light 'em up, although it being furniture doesn't affect the spawn chance.
